Lest We Forget: The Universality of Family Photographs

Lest We Forget: The Universality of Family Photographs

12 June 2019 - 28 July 2019

Family photographs express interest in, and affection for, the people, places, activities and moments that are most close and dear. Coinciding with the Year of Tolerance in the UAE, this exhibition and companion book explore universalities inherent in portraits of ourselves, taken by ourselves and for ourselves. The curation brings together disparate photographs taken by unrelated families living in the UAE and Spain during the final decades of the 20th century. Viewed side by side, an unexpected synergy springs forth, revealing commonalities that resonate deeply in these diverse family photographs. In these snapshots, we may recognize that we are different, yet at the same time, quite similar. We are also reminded that family photographs communicate what matters most to people, individually as well as universally.

The exhibition will run from 12 June until 28 July.
