Chew With Your Mouth Open with The Faraway Bistro (Sondos Azzam, Emilie Wall and Freya Smith)

This Happening, hosted by the Faraway Bistro will manifest itself into a collective meal in which each participant will be encouraged to interact with their tablescapes in an unconventional manner within the parameters set by the bistro at the time of the Happening. The theme of this project is the disruption of the table. This is encouraged through the use of our napkins embroidered with the words “Chew with your mouth open” to disregard social etiquette through this off-brand feast. The napkins also present a sense of community between the participants as they feast alone.

The audience’s role is to watch the experience unfold while the participants challenge their interactions with their individual tablescapes.

This event is part of Jam’atna: Time, Synchrony and the Divine, a series of four online Suhoor Happenings put together by Nahla Tabbaa, exploring the communal spirit of Ramadan in a multi-dimensional way and addressing the Holy Month’s reconstruction of time. The invited hosts are inspired by our restructured eating habits, surrendering and the altering of our pace as a sacred act to synchronise with the holy month and transcend our daily urban rhythms and cycles. Each host invites participants of the happening to rethink how their own creative practices synchronise and align with the values of the Holy Month.

The faraway bistro is a collective formed by Sondos Azzam, Emilie Wall and Freya Smith; three students studying MA Design for Art Direction at UAL. Their practices are chameleonic to the bistro.

Not your conventional feast, this collaborative project seeks to turn lonesome meals into a virtual gathering, breaking the sacrosanctity of a table. Due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ritualistic habits of a meal have been disregarded and disrupted. Through 'The Faraway Bistro', we are inviting you to explore, excavate and redefine what a meal can be.

Sondos Azzam is an Artist based in London and Dubai. Her practice explores the relationship between food and the table to create an archival of a communion. This involves excavating an event, assembling its remnants and decorating a table. Her practice takes form through temporal installations and photography.

Emilie Wall is a Set and Experiential Designer from the UK with an academic and professional background in design and events. Her practice explores food as a medium for communication.

Freya Smith is a multi-disciplinary creative with a background in Graphic Design, Art Production and Digital Marketing. Her interests lie in exploring the realm of minimalist aesthetics, extended even to culinary design and photography.
