Open-calls for the year 2022/23


Comprising of The Artistic Research Grant, The Curatorial and Artistic Developmental Exhibition programs, The Residency, and the Internship and Mentorship Programs, all designed to support emerging practitioners in the MENASA region. 

The open calls fall under the Capacity-Building Programs, which continue to evolve from insights identified through focus groups and studying the response to Warehouse421’s general public programs. The programs invite creative practitioners and professionals from within  the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia regions and who demonstrate a commitment to their chosen creative field.

Docents Program

 

Applications open: 10 August  - 29 August

Docents will start in September 2021

The Warehouse421 Docents Program is targeted for alumnae/alumni students. Warehouse421 Docents are the trained volunteers who will be providing educational services for Warehouse421 visitors. The program will provide training sessions for participants to ensure volunteers are equipped and able to use their communication skills to engage with visitors. As our mandate highlights inclusivity of space, the training will also include specialists in the field to learn how to deal with People of Determination, Audience Relations Training, and Exhibition Related Training.

Internship and Mentorship Program

Internship will start in April 2021

The program offers internship and mentorship opportunities for emerging-creative professionals from diverse backgrounds, providing professional preparation and career development to committed professionals in their early careers. These opportunities will provide insight into career path and future opportunities. The internship can be structured to follow college requirements, or be tailored for a longer-term engagement for young graduates and art professionals. It can be designed to be remote or on-site, and can be undertaken for college credit. The internship will offer the opportunity to be immersed in a cultural center's operations across various departments with a targeted focus on a specific field. Depending on the selected area of focus as well as Warehouse421’s needs, interns would work with the Head of Warehouse421, Programs Manager, Education Manager, Communications Manager or Operation Manager.

Artistic Development Exhibition Program

 In collaboration with The Institute for Emerging Art, Warehouse421 launches its Artistic Developmental program, an exhibition process that emphasizes the professional and creative development of participating creative practitioners. The program is open to UAE-based early-mid career creative practitioners and successful applicants will be awarded with a AED10,000 participation fee. The realization and production of their projects will be exhibited at Warehouse421 in 2022.

Artistic Research Grant

 

Deadline: June 26, 2021

Projects will start in October 2021

The grant is open to emerging artists within the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia regions, and supports practice-based research investigating new social questions through interdisciplinary methodologies. Creative practitioners can work through disciplines including but not limited to visual art and curations, design and technology, literary arts, culinary arts, music, theater, and performance. Warehouse421 will award the grantees a budget up to AED75,000 ($20,380) to support their research and project.

Homebound Residency: DIGITAL COMMUNITIES

Applications open: May 16 until August 7, 2021

Residency will start in October 2021 - April 2022

After the successful first iteration of the Homebound Residency program, Warehouse421 launches its second iteration with the theme, DIGITAL COMMUNITIES. Led by guest-curator, Reem Shadid, successful applicants will be awarded with a production budget up to AED20,000 to be employed for any equipment or material required for the completion and realisation of their projects. The six-month program will culminate in an online presentation of processes and works.

Curatorial Development Exhibition Program: FUTURE PERFECT

Warehouse421 and the Bombay Institute for Critical Analysis and Research (BICAR) invite curators to propose a group exhibition and publication on ‘Future Perfect: Catastrophe and the Contemporary’. The curatorial development program will entail rigorous study, artist and artwork selection, and writing on the the theme. The successful curator/curatorial collective will receive an award of AED20,000 and participate in a colloquium led by acclaimed MENASA parctitioners. Their proposal will be developed for an exhibition opening in 2022.
