Fall 2022 PROGRAM

From the plants we harvest, the animals we herd, to the stars seen high above, knowledge production has historically been based on our surroundings. The natural environment has directly shaped our cultures and lifestyles, informed our crafts, communal spaces and our culinary traditions. Food, architecture, fashion, materiality–our ways of life were shaped by our ecological contexts.

As we fell deeper into the traps of consumerism and excess–wanting to build higher, grow larger, live bigger–we dug further into the Earth, uprooting our source of grounding. Over time, we became more distant, building barriers between ourselves and the natural environment, a once powerful source of enlightenment for our communities.

This season brings us closer to these potent sources of knowledge that we have grown to neglect. It is dedicated to stripping away the packaging, breaking down barriers, and reconnecting our minds, bodies, and beings with the original teacher.

The Fall 2022 Program is in conversation with Warehouse421 fall group exhibition On Foraging: Food Knowledge and Environmental Imaginaries in The UAE’s Landscape, and offers a wide-ranging public program, which includes talks, workshops and special events that are a mindful exploration of communal and creative approaches to thinking about climate action. This is one of the most extensive and robust public engagement programs presented by Warehouse421 yet.

If you would like to propose a workshop, please use this form.

Please note that as per Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi regulations, a "green" status on the Al Hosn app is required for participation and attendance of any workshops, talks, and in-space events.

For those who are unvaccinated, a 48-hour negative PCR test result is required for ages 18 and above.

On Foraging: Food Knowledge and Environmental Imaginaries in the UAE's Landscape

9 October 2022 - 25 December 2022
10:00 - 20:00

To forage is to search for potential in a landscape, spurred on by a lingering sense of the unknown. On Foraging explores the nuances of what it means to be in constant search of nurturing and feeding, for the individual and the collective, within seemingly arid environments. On Foraging explores the long and multifaceted history of an environment that has for generations fed its own people and others in a rich variety of ways. There are deep reserves of cultural and agricultural knowledge that have been passed down through generations that continue to be tapped into and added to today and On Foraging reveals the work that goes into unearthing the landscape through a confluence of personal and collective narratives. Our project  foregrounds these moments and for what it means to nurture across multiple scales.
