For our closing film + talk series with Cinema Akil, we will be hosting a panel discussion on the future of Arab filmmaking focused on Sudan as a case study. 

The curators of the virtual exhibition, Hyphenated Spaces, present alternative ways of looking at six different sub-themes of artist Hashel Al Lamki’s solo-exhibition, The Cup and The Saucer, by selecting thirty-four artworks by artists representing various geographies, periods, and styles. 

This talk will showcase never before seen supplemental elements to the artists’ final artwork, with poetry readings, and recorded processes and performances.

The conversation will explore how the use of exhaustive experimentation developed as a method of generating a body of work. The artists’ use of repetition materializes both formally and conceptually in their final works.

In this workshop, led by Artist and Professor Zara Mahmoud will teach participants  to create drawings that will be assembled to form an exquisite corpse. Every three participants will draw one figurative form – head, torso, legs.

Participants will explore basic animation methods and learn an easy way to create charming animated loops and gifs, incorporating traditional and digital means without using computers or fancy equipment.

Join us this month to explore the ancient art of Japanese bookbinding also known as Stab binding. This traditional binding was practiced in Japan, China, and other far Eastern countries using a variety of techniques, the most common variety being a 4-hole binding.

Clay Corner Studio's workshop will teach participants different hand-building techniques to create various clay objects. The workshop is a step-by-step process to understand the basics of working with clay.

This workshop will introduce participants to the art of Palestinian embroidery known as Tatreez. During the session, artist Joanna Barakat will discuss the history and cultural context of Palestinian embroidery from various Palestine regions before 1948 and its form and meaning after 1948.
Participants will look at how different artists incorporate Tatreez in their work and learn from demonstrating how to cross-stitch. All participants will be encouraged to cross-stitch a motif.

This panel will feature the five interns and assistant artists' roles in making the Cup and the Saucer exhibition. The discussion will touch on their experiences working in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and working directly with the artist and curator.

What does repetition mean? In everyday life, we tend to think of repetition as an endless, insistent monotony and sameness, the background against which we foreground creativity: the new idea, the work of art, falling in love and other life ‘events’.

The show seeks to discuss the metaphoric and momentary divorce that takes place when a cup parts from its saucer; and, how within that moment, and that movement of estrangement, a single item breaks into two. A once whole object becomes two separate individuals.

Part of a new podcast series, the first episode of Warehouse421 Conversations tackles the current interruptions in the local art ecosystem and the various ways that livelihood in the arts can continue during times of disruption. 

“The Salt of the Earth” is a documentary about the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, who during the last forty years has been travelling through the continents, in the footsteps of an ever changing humanity. He has witnessed the major events of our recent history; international conflicts, starvations and exodus and its consequences.

The workshop will examine the body of work of Rejection and Reflection, part of The Cup and The Saucer exhibition (7 March -17th May), and a body of work that showcases the artist’s interest in identifying new meanings in ordinary and mundane house-hold objects.

This session is an informal roundtable discussion, led by the interns involved in the making and creating of the ‘The Cup and The Saucer’ exhibition.

The talk aims to shed light on the process of exhibition-making from the perspective of the interns involved, including working first-hand with the artist and the curator.

This workshop engages construction – the forming of three–dimensional structures with the function of sturdiness, with the outcome being the demonstration of the strength of a frail material. Participants will choose a skin, stitch abstract forms, fill the vessel with sand from a specific site and display the works in that same site.

This lecture, led by award winning site-specific artist Stephan Koplowitz, will give some definition and history to site-specific performance and with examples of ground-breaking public site art from the past thirty years of his career.

Participants will create one or two designs that will be created into stencils and use them to print a repeat pattern on a plain textile or paper surface of their choice. Participants will learn how to communicate a pattern design, not just for aesthetic purposes, but also to communicate a message or story.

This discussion will question the role of origin, authenticity, and visibility in the work of ‘Paper nor Me xxl’ among other examples, considering the ethical implications of ikhtiyār and how it can still operate as a contemporary form of production.

Participants interested in performance are invited to attend the workshop and develop their understanding of the fundamental techniques in the production and creation of site-specific performances. Participants do not have to perform and can respond to all activities through writing.

Participants will create their own journal/watercolor sketchbook from scratch using saddle stitch binding technique. Participants will also learn about art journaling and documenting ideas.

This leather crafting course taught by Naresh Kumar, founder and creative director of a leather atelier in Dubai called 24th Street, is intensive and completely hands-on. Equipped with the skills mastered in Naresh’s introductory course, participants will progress to making a large-scale portable item such as a cross-body or bucket style bag.

Zines are short self-published works that are not made for profit, but self-expression. Participants are encouraged to bring old magazines, journal entries, found objects and old books for collaging while working with different –sometimes unconventional- materials. They will be organizing content, designing spreads, assembling their zines and learning how they can be reproduced and shared.

In this session, artists, writers, critics, curators, gallerists, and art enthusiasts are invited to attend an intimate session for artists to present their practice in exchange for constructive criticism.

The two sessions will be part of “Sour Sweet”, a program of readings led by Maryam Wissam Al Dabbagh, that explores readings of poetry and literature of the Arab Diaspora, pertaining to the tensions between the inevitable return, and departure and what lies in between.

This talk takes Sam Cooke’s 1957 song, You Send Me, as a point of departure for thinking through the concept of authorship. Bringing together musical excerpts, critical insight, and research into the song’s writing and public reception, the talk takes up this pop single as a thought experiment that delineates the limits of authorship, which is often understood as the privileged expression of the individual subject.
