Participants of this short course will learn to recreate an art form that dates back to the seventh century – Arabic calligraphy. Led by Majid Alyousef and Wissam Shawkat, the workshop covers a range of calligraphy styles. This course will introduce participants to the history and development of Arabic calligraphy, including different styles and examples of canonical artworks through the ages. Participants will progress from making a few basic strokes to learning two elementary styles – Ruqa’a and a basic form of Diwani.

Course structure:

Session 1-2: Introduction
21-22 September

Lecture

  • History and development of Arabic calligraphy 
  • Various styles of Islamic calligraphy and how they differ from each other in terms of form and proportion 
  • Examples of works in different styles by the great masters of calligraphy 

Practice

  • Introduction to calligraphy materials, including ink and reed pen 
  • Basic exercises 

 

Session 3-4: Ruqa’a and Basic Diwani
28-29 September

This session focuses on the Ruqa’a and Diwani styles, which share many rules for letter structure and connection. They are considered elementary forms of Arabic calligraphy, and are quite easy to learn.
