In this guided photo walk, participants will gain insights into techniques of documenting the UAE’s architectural heritage, including focusing tightly on building facades and eliminating external data such as geographic and situational context. The walk will include stops at buildings, where participants will witness a complex and precise approach to architectural documentation and learn about working with light and the best times of the day to shoot different buildings and angles. After capturing a series of raw images, participants will return to Warehouse421 for a demonstration of some post-production techniques.

Centring on the concept of imagination, this workshop is led by Edward Bakst, an award-winning animation designer and director and a former Guggenheim fellow. In each of the three sessions, participants are given assignments prompting them to exercise what Bakst calls “gravity-free and reality-independent thinking and ideation.

The name of German painter and art historian Wolfgang Beltracchi became at once infamous and sacred in the art world when his forgery scheme, the biggest of the postwar era, came to light. In partnership with Goethe-Institut, Warehouse421 is pleased to show a screening of Beltracchi: The Art of Forgery, a documentary directed by Arne Birkenstock that reenacts how the scandal played out.

What’s the key to designing a dress with the perfect fit? As participants of this workshop will learn, the answer lies in skilled patternmaking. The key to patternmaking, in turn, is understanding the relationship between pattern, body, and garment.

The step-by-step process consists of a facilitated drawing session to generate images for screen printing, the introduction of stencils to create collages, screen treatment and the application of images, and finally, screen printing designs onto the desired surface.

This workshop will introduce its participants to the art of Palestinian embroidery known as “tatreez”. During the session, artist Joanna Barakat will explain the historical and cultural context of “tatreez”, including its connection to various regions of Palestine, before discussing how it changed in form and meaning after 1948. 

Led by leather specialist, Naresh Kumar of 24^th Street in Dubai, this three-day workshop provides an immersion into working with leather, covering modes of leather, tanning, tempers, stitching and more. Each participant will emerge with three bespoke leather items such as a passport wallet, tray and cardholder. All materials will be provided.

Participants in this light-hearted workshop will be guided to design, cut and produce their own tote bag, and decorate it with a print or illustration of their own creation.

Participants in this intermediate level workshop will receive guided instruction on how to make the burned incense known as “Dukhoon”.

This workshop offers a creative way to reuse, reinvent and recycle paper scraps, turning them into handmade paper. Participants will learn the ancient art of papermaking using an ordinary kitchen blender, deckle and molds, and junk paper. These materials will be used to explore the basic techniques of pulp production, forming, couching and air-drying to produce beautiful handmade papers that can be used for cards, scrapbooking, printmaking, drawing, painting, bookmaking, and more.

This workshop provides a detailed introduction to paper marbling, which is a form of surface design that produces patterns similar to smooth marble or stone. Beginning with a brief overview of different types of marbling techniques from around the world, participants will then learn how to put some of these basic techniques into practice, including preparing paper for marbling and using marble paint to create a unique pattern.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the traditional art of macramé, which involves using knots to create beautiful items. After learning just three basic knots, participants will then have the opportunity to create their own attractive plant hanger.

Perfume making has a long history in the region and is a living art in the United Arab Emirates. In this workshop, participants will learn to create various forms of perfumes based on old family recipes. While discussing the ingredients and the alchemy of scents, the instructor will also evoke the cultural memories that the fragrances inspire. Each participant will emerge from the session with a scent of their making.

This month marks the final installment of the “Khayal” series in collaboration with Early Starters will showcase the new book by UAE-based author, Christiana Gonzales, named “Toby and the Falcon.”

Warehouse421 joins forces with Cinema Akil to present a new season of film in Abu Dhabi dedicated exclusively to contemporary films made by, or about, Arab women. This extensive series will run until April 2019. This month features the films Mamsous and Cactus Flower.

Participants in this hands-on workshop will bring plain textiles to life with colorful designs and patterns inspired by talismanic symbols.  Taking inspiration from the Nomadic Traces exhibition, and the original artwork, ‘If Speech Is Silver…’ by Khalid Mezaina, participants will create stamps out of their designed motifs, which will then be used for printing repeat patterns onto plain textile surfaces.

This workshop is designed to take intermediate photographers from shooting in semi-manual modes to full manual mode, allowing them to infuse more creativity into their photography. Participants will enhance their understanding of how to work with light and movement through theoretical lessons and practical exercises. Techniques covered include the use of High Dynamic Range [HDR], panning, light painting, metering, flash, histograms, long exposures and advanced composition.  By the end of the course, participants will have the necessary foundations to confidently delve into more advanced genres of photography, such as portraiture, travel, family, food, and wedding photography.

Nomadic Traces: Journeys of Arabian Scripts explores the role that scripts have played in defining and preserving the cultural identity of past and present civilizations, and on the migrational and transformative nature of writing, and its ability to freely cross borders and cultures. The exhibition focuses on the development of some of the key Abjads (consonantal alphabets) of the Middle East. It poetically links the past with the present, revealing the wealth of the region through its many scripts, including Phoenician, Aramaic, Musnad, Palmyrene, Nabatean, and early Arabic (Jazm).

We often overlook urban spaces in search of nature, but what happens when we try to paint the combination of the two, taking inspiration from the Impressionist’s approach to depicting what’s around us. The workshop puts emphasis on methodology and interpretation of urban cityscapes, using drawing and colour to engage our imagination.

Over the course of this two-day workshop, participants will break free from Auto Mode and gain a solid understanding of the essential elements for achieving a perfect exposure: ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. They will also explore the creative side of photography with a focus on the traditional rules of composition, as well as how to break them. By the end of the workshop, each participant should be able to confidently craft and shoot photos in semi-manual modes.

Participants in this four-part course will learn to create fun, easy and classic wire-wrap jewelry pieces, including earrings, rings and pendants. Techniques covered include creating smooth, consistent spiral shapes and loops, wrapping beads into frames, and fabricating, assembling and finishing various jewelry pieces from scratch using brass, silver and natural stone beads. The course is designed for beginners and therefore includes detailed instructions.  For those that have never picked up wire and pliers before, this is a good place to start!

Warehouse 421, and our visiting in-house resident artist Jerry B. Martin, invites you to a three-day conceptual workshop in which the artist requires your collaboration for the production of a multidisciplinary artwork that explores the boundaries between language, cinema and the self.

This session – the first of a series on tolerance – will include an introduction to tolerance in its many forms, including respecting the differences of others, before turning its attention to the role of the UAE as a model for tolerance. Participants will take part in a wide range of activities related to tolerance and diversity, including a book reading, ‘Flags of the World’ bingo, and completing an art project – that illustrates the benefits of blending and working with others.   

At this talk, three leading cultural figures from the Arab world will consider the influence of culture on the history and future of their respective cities. Ultimately, they will seek to answer one question: How can culture contribute to the building of a new urban identity?

Character Study is a foundational course designed for students of all levels of experience to learn a range of useful skills for developing fictional characters. Over the duration of the 4-month course [featuring two face-to-face sessions per month from February to May 2019], students will engage in theatre exercises, play readings and the practicing of short scenes from a selection of works.

The ancients called this pervading spirit the “genius loci.” More recently, with humankind’s perpetual search for meaning in the built environment, the phrase has come to be understood as the sum of all physical as well as symbolic values in nature and the human environment that give a place its distinctive character.

Participants in this four-part short course will receive a practical introduction to designing and making contemporary jewelry, with a particular focus on working with brass and silver. Participants will have the opportunity to work creatively from original drawings, develop their jewelry making skills, and explore contemporary forms in metal.  Technical processes covered in the course include piercing and sawing an intricate design into a backplate using a jeweler’s saw with a very fine blade, fabricating a pendant or earring from scratch, using brass and silver plates and sawed pieces to assemble flexible jewelry, and conducting finishing and polishing.

Participants in this interactive workshop will consider a mix of natural and industrial materials – including some in between – and focus on their material properties, including translucency, fragility, adaptation, resistance, opaqueness and impermanence.

Participants in this practical workshop will learn the basics of making zines – short for ‘magazine’ or ‘fanzine’ – in order to better express and publish their own works in magazine form.

Undaunted, she embraces all three, joining a clandestine network of women in a movement that forces the world to recognize the Palestinian right to self-determination for the first time.

A short documentary tribute to all of the women in Gaza, told through the stories of four women who are trying to leave an imprint of change, love, and success, despite all of the difficulties they face.  The film focuses on the lives of a singer, a fashion designer, an activist and a mother, who each share a hope for a better future.

This workshop provides a creative way to reuse, reinvent and recycle paper scraps into your own handmade paper. Participants will learn the ancient art of papermaking using an ordinary kitchen blender, deckle and molds, and junk paper.  These materials will be used to demonstrate the basic techniques of pulp production, forming, couching and air-drying to produce beautiful handmade papers that can be used for cards, scrapbooking, printmaking, drawing, painting, bookmaking, and more.

The Human Scale questions our assumptions about modern cities, exploring what happens when we put people into the centre of our equations.  For 40 years, the Danish architect Jan Gehl has systematically studied human behavior in cities. His starting point was an interest in people, more than buildings – in what he called Life Between Buildings. His ideas have since inspired the creation of walking streets, the building and improvements of bike paths and the reorganization of parks, squares and other public spaces throughout many cities in the Nordic region and around the world. 

Participants in this short course will learn the basics of Arabic calligraphy.  Working with ink on paper, participants will be encouraged to experiment with the Arabic alphabet, utilizing a combination of arcs, lines and curves.

In conjunction with the exhibition Architecture of Loneliness, featured artist and architectural photographer, Mohamed Somji, will lead a group of participants on an intimate journey through the Mina Zayed district, offering insights of photography that studies the intersection of architecture and fine art.
