Summer Club: The Making Edition is a diverse mix of introductory, intermediate and intensive workshops focused on different aspects of the creative production process. It is specifically designed for people with an interest in the creative process and emerging makers of varying skill levels.

Running from 3 to 21 July at Warehouse421, the Summer Club encompasses a range of craft-based disciplines, including working with textiles, leather and paper, and digital arts such as photography and video production. It also includes a series of technical workshops hosted by Nagwa Design exploring 3D printing, laser cutting and lighting design, taking advantage of their designers’ expertise and professional on-site facilities.

All Summer Club: The Making Edition sessions feature a mix of theory and practice, enabling participants to learn about the history and unique challenges of each discipline, before practicing it for themselves. No prior knowledge or experience is required, unless otherwise specified.

Stitched Up

3 July - 4 July 18:30 - 21:30

This 2-day workshop provides an intensive course in the process of making a button-up shirt. From selecting the right fabric to working the stitch, the workshop introduces participants to the basic principles of clothing design.

Light and Shade

5 July - 7 July 18:30 - 20:30

This 3-part workshop provides an introduction to the product design process, with a particular focus on lighting objects, using wood and soft wood materials.

Digital Motion

6 July - 7 July 11:00 - 16:00

This workshop breaks down a number of complex filmmaking techniques into practical and accessible tools for capturing and editing video.

This hands-on session provides a step-by-step introduction to the screen-printing process. With a focus on experimental printing, the collaborative workshop also explores the history of the medium, the aspects of color theory and the importance of considering print and production factors in any design process.

This workshop offers a creative way to reuse, reinvent and recycle paper scraps, turning them into handmade paper.

New Dimensions

This workshop provides an introduction to the 3D printing process and the design of small-scale objects under the guidance of experts in the field.

This workshop provides an intensive introduction to paper marbling, which is a form of surface design that produces patterns similar to smooth marble or stone.

Needle and Thread

15 July 18:30 - 21:30

This workshop delves into the world of contemporary embroidery. Participants will learn essential embroidery techniques and tricks, and start a sampler of different embroidery stitches that have various textures and effects.

Hide and Seek

Led by leather specialist, Naresh Kumar of 24th Street in Dubai, this two-day session explores the details of working with leather, covering modes of leather, tanning, tempers, stitching and more.

Making Scents

19 July 18:30 - 21:30

Perfume making has a long history in the region and is a living art in the Emirates. This session offers a very personal workshop, demonstrating how to create various forms of perfumes based on old family recipes.

Elegant Metal

19 July - 21 July 18:30 - 21:30

This 3-day workshop delves into the world of jewellery making. Participants will learn basic jewellery sawing and piercing techniques and fabrication methods such as filling and polishing.

Photography Level 1

20 July - 21 July 11:00 - 16:00

In this two-day workshop, participants will break free of Auto mode and gain a solid understanding of the essential elements in achieving a perfect exposure: ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. They will also explore the creative side of photography with a focus on the traditional rules of composition, as well as how to break them.
